Tribe Splits with Sox

Boston Red SoxJohn Lester blew a five-run lead for the first time in his career and the Boston Red Sox fell to the Cleveland Indians 8-7 on Thursday night. Not much else to say here – the Sox took a 5-0 lead into the 2nd inning when some weird things started to happen. Lester started to get dinked and dunked while the Indians chipped the Sox lead down to 5-3 in the third ended up taking the lead heading into the 9th inning. A 2-run shot gave the Sox a 7-6 lead and setup Daniel Bard for a save. Long story short, Bard gave up a hit and a few walks to put the winning run on second. A bloop single from Russell Branyan brought in two runs and ended the Sox night.

Sox Pitchers Continue Road Dominance

Boston Red SoxBy pitching eight shutout innings last night in a 4-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians, Daisuke Matsuzaka continued a remarkable run of road dominance for the Boston Red Sox pitching staff. In the last nine games away from Fenway Park, the Sox pitching staff has an incredibly low 0.70 ERA and, more importantly, is 8-0. Terry Francona, Boston’s manager, commented on the streak: “The more consistent guys are, the better. We didn’t do much offensively tonight, but the way [Matsuzaka] was pitching, you get one, one, one, one, it ends up being a good night.”

Dice-K sprinkled four hits (all singles) over his eight innings to earn his 150th career victory (108 were earned in Japan).

Tim Wakefield takes his 1-4 record (6.02 ERA) to the mound tonight in the second of four at Jacobs Field.
