Papi Gets His Swagger Back

Boston Red SoxWhile sporting a pair of classy red Reeboks, Boston Red Sox DH David “Don’t Call Me Jose” Ortiz won the 2010 All Star Home Run Derby in Anaheim, CA last night. Ortiz cracked 8 home runs in the first round, mostly down the rightfield line. Those home runs moved him into the second round where he faced the Detroit Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera. Ortiz’s 13 home runs in the semifinals pushed him into the final where he faced off against former Red Sox prospect and current Florida Marlins start Hanley Ramirez. Ortiz easily took care of business, hitting 11 home runs to Ramirez’s 5. Incidentally, Ortiz became the first Boston Red Sox to win the Home Run Derby and tied Bobby Abreu (2005) with the most home runs in the final round (11) since the format change that occurred in 1995.

Big Papi’s swagger never left. He is the definition of the man and everyone knows it. Even New Yorkers. He is more clutch that A-Rod by a factor of a zillion and is so much cooler of a personality.

Well, maybe it just took a little siesta. I don’t feel like he’s had the same level of confidence the last year or so. Whether it was losing his protection in the line-up (Manny) or something else, he just didn’t seem the same. Even the way he comes to the plate now. He used to slam his hands together like he was saying to the pitcher “I will crush you!” Now it’s more like “Yeah for me.”

Regardless, I love the guy. His personality is the best and I love his approach to the game. I think this HR Derby win gives him the shot in the arm he needs to restore whatever confidence he lost.
